Back in the 1980’s I went to the Dakotas to visit with some Indian buddies I had served with, and in one small town just off a rez, there were signs on the window and door of the cafe that said “No dogs, no Indians”…back then, too, I was a strong supporter of AIM. By the way, I use the phrase “American Indian” because Russell Means, one of my all-time heroes, made the statement that everyone born here is a “native” American, so the distinction gets lost…
